Soy Ela Maldonado. Viajo por Caracas en carro; y cuando toca, viajo a pie. Sin embargo, del paisaje rítmico caraqueño lo que cambia es la velocidad. Desde hace más de tres años recojo la basura de la ciudad y la transformo en piezas únicas para lucir o vestir, redimensionando el diseño capitalino de vanguardia. Confieso que mi intención se cumple cuando mi cliente se ha quitado la basura de la cabeza para ponérsela en el hombro. Artista, Arquitecto, Diseñadora, Profesora, y creadora de Ciudadela Creativa, luego de vivir y aprender a reciclar en un Colegio del Mundo Unido noruego, admito que tengo 38 años pero aún me siento una niña que juega en una ciudad desechable

DESIGNER

I am Ela Maldonado. I travel through Caracas by car, when it is necessary I go by foot. However, what changes on the Caracas rhythmic landscape is the speed. For more than ten years I have resized the capital’s cutting-edge design by collecting garbage from the city and turned it into unique, useful pieces to wear. I confess that my intention is fulfilled when my client removes trash from his/her head to wear it on the shoulder. Architect, designer, Professor, Artist and creator of Ciudadela Creativa, after living and learning how to recycle in a Norwegian UWC, I admit that I am 37 years old but I still feel like a little girl playing in a disposable city.

Ciudadela es ese mundo que construyo debajo de la mesa.
Mi marca surge por la necesidad de sacar la idea del reciclaje del templo y llevarla al público.

El material “reusado” puede ser tanto útil como estético. Con esa idea en mente, actualmente, mezclo colores y texturas. Trabajo con collages, tipografías, mensajes e ironías. Ilustro la ciudad que creo debemos amar y respetar. Todo esto, con el contenido de la pancarta que es reusada. Además de obtener un producto estético, debe ser funcional. Diseño la forma para que se adapte a las actividades cotidianas, que van desde un día universitario, o de oficina, pasando por una tarde de conversa, hasta una noche de rumba. Pruebo todos mis modelos y los adapto a las necesidades y usos. Unido a esto, mezclo texturas y telas que sean resistentes y que mantengan el estilo urbano de mi línea. Intento mantener viva una sensación lúdica y de reciclaje, tanto de objetos como de recuerdos, en unas variadas y presumidas, “carteras pancarta” que piden, además de un hombro, una actitud urbana y especial, una postura altiva pero graciosa, una personalidad llena de confianza. Trasmiten picardía y nostalgia, rebeldía y actualidad.

BRAND
Ciudadela is the world I have built under my table.
My brand arises from the need to take the idea of recycling out of the temple and bring it to the public.

The “reused” material can be both useful and aesthetic. With that in mind, I mix colors and textures, working with collages, typography, messages and ironies. I illustrate the city that I believe we should love and respect.

All this, with reused banner as my material. In addition I search for a product that is both beautiful and functional. Our design suits everyday activities, ranging from a college day, or office, through an afternoon of talks, until one night of rumba. I test all my models and adapt them to needs and uses. In addition, I mix textures and fabrics that are resistant, maintaining the urban style of my line.

I try to keep alive a playful feeling, both with objects and memories, in a varied and presumptuous, “banner objects” that, in addition to one shoulder, ask an urban and special attitude, a graceful posture and a personality full of confidence. Ciudadela transmits playfulness and nostalgia, rebellion and current aesthetic.

PIEZAS PETARE

Las texturas, formas y siluetas de las fachadas del barrio caraqueño me parecen fascinantes.
Las observo con curiosidad y respeto.
Pienso que son unas de las formas de nuestra realidad más fuertes y autóctonas.
Es muy común ver como se intenta esconderlas, pintarlas, taparlas. Yo quiero usarlas, exponerlas, exaltarlas y hacerles homenaje hasta quererlas.

Contigo, una pieza Petare, de la estética de la construcción “improvisada”: piezas únicas, hechas de lona, retazos y textiles reutilizados. Ilustradas y serigrafiadas por mi e inspiradas en nuestro alrededor.

Textures, shapes and silhouettes of the facades of the “barrio” from Caracas seem fascinating to me.
I observe them with curiosity and respect.
I think they are one of the strongest forms of our reality.
It is very common to see how people try to hide them, paint them, cover them. I want to use them, display them, exalt them and make tribute to them until we learn how to love them.
